Dog Food Recalls – What’s Next? Homemade Meals!

What is with all the dog food recalls?!

Great, is making homemade dog food our only choice to ensure our furry friends will be safe? Of course not. By understanding more about the actual recall, we can educate ourselves and better learn what is safe to buy.  It all started with a foreign manufacturer using contaminated wheat gluten in the food. This wheat gluten is the culprit behind almost all of the problems when they first surfaced. Smart pet owners began to read labels to discriminate what was safe rather than unsafe. However, this tactic proved fruitless. More foreign manufacturing mistakes began to surface. A completely different manufacturer was found to use a contaminated rice concentrate in the company’s dog food. Why not just read the labels for rice concentrate? Well, the manufacturer did not include it on the label!

Now, all of us dog owners are just about fed up with all the contaminated ingredients making their way into our best friend’s dinner! This brings back to mind the option of cooking home made meals. But seriously, most of us have a hard enough time making consistent home made meals for our spouse and children, let alone a separate meal for the dog! Not only that, but a dog is not made to digest human food. Human food can cause a whole host of new problems for Fido or Princess. If you ABSOLUTELY must make a few home cooked meals until you feel it is safe to once again purchase dog food, keep this tip in mind.

  • Go Natural
Organic foods with no chemicals or artificial ingredients are necessary. These foods will be digested better than foods with artificial components.
For the rest of us, here are the best tips when looking for healthy, uncontaminated dog food!
  • Just Say NO to Grains
Grain is really not unhealthy for a dog. But, since these fillers are the number one source of the problem, it’s best to just steer clear of them for now.
  • Top Three Ingredients are Important!
One of the top three ingredients listed should either be beef, chicken, fish, turkey or some sort of protein. Good sources of protein are most important in a dog’s diet. It’s no coincidence that when you are cooking steak your best friend suddenly acts as if they haven’t eaten in a month!
  • Only Buy Branded Food
If there is no company name or contact information, pass. A reputable company will always state their brand on the label and provide pertinent contact information. If you do have any questions about the ingredients, feel free to call or email their customer service. They will be more than happy to assist, especially with all that has recently happened.
There is safe dog food available! Don’t be scared to buy it, but do educate yourself. No owner wants to see their friend hurt and especially over something that could be avoided. Purchase high quality, low grain dog food and pet food. Following the above tips will help ease your mind and keep your pet safe.
